Salt air, pistols, and why we re-hang in June

A winter photograph is a winter photograph. By June the harbor has been in the rubber for months, especially if the putter lives in a trunk or a locker that is not sealed. Nellie Seabrook’s James Island summer was a pistol installed without a second hang; the toe dropped and the Cooper took the rest. Re-hanging in June is not upselling. It is admitting that mass in the hands is seasonal here.

Salt air does not politely stay outside the alley. It sits on the brass, on the card, on the wraps we store, and on the wraps you bring. A pistol has more rubber than a thin tour wrap. More rubber is more sponge. Extra tape under a pistol is more sponge still. Counterweights in the butt change hanging mass even when they stay dry; when they pack salt they change it twice. We hang before a swap and after a swap for that reason. We also ask you to come back when the season turns, because the after-photograph from March is not the after-photograph from June.

Maren keeps a scrap pistol in the cabinet so the shop has a control. If the scrap gains, your gamer gained. If you refuse a June hour because “nothing changed,” you are arguing with a scale we already watched. The graphite from winter can stay in your bag as history. It should not stay as a current claim.

Re-hanging does not always mean a new head. Often the same blade is still the right cousin and the wrap needs to dry, or the tape needs to come off, or the pistol needs to be a smaller sponge. Sometimes the arc that matched 32° in February does not match 38° in June, and then we are having a Harbor Rail conversation, not a Pistol Swap conversation. Stacking a cheap swap on a stale hang is how summers get lost.

We will not tell you a pistol quiets the hands. That is a lesson dressed as hardware. We will tell you whether the toe fell, how many degrees, and whether peninsula grain will notice. If the only reason you want a pistol is a swing thought, start with a coach. If the reason is a hang reason — a shy toe, a length change, a need for mass in the hands that the arc already voted for — then the wrap belongs on the rail, twice.

June is when the lock swells. Call before you walk the alley. Tuesday through Saturday the rail is open ten to six. Bring the gamer in a cover so grit does not fake the dangle. Tell us where the putter sleeps. Trunks on Meeting Street are not closets. Closets on the harbor are not deserts. The photograph will mention the weather because the weather already mentioned the toe.

If someone else is paying, a gift slip still requires a claimed window. We will not skip the second hang because the clock was a present. Salt does not care who wrote the check. The toe still falls when the rubber soaks. That is the June argument, and it is the same argument that opened this shop in 2017.
